From home remedy to tourist attraction: mamajuana in the heart of the Colonial Zone


In the stone paved streets of the Colonial Zone, merchants hope every day to offer tourists the Dominican elixir of excellence: mamajuana.
The traditional drink, with its roots in the Dominican colonial history, has become a symbol of culture and tourism in the Dominican Republic, attracting visitors from all parts of the world to taste its unique flavor and its properties considered to be aphrodisiacs.
Mamajuana is a Dominican liquor prepared with ron, red wine and honey, fermented in a 16-ounce bottle of glass with branches of beech trees for six months, although some retailers prefer “fermentation for as long as a year”.
The prices vary between RD$ 500 and RD$ 1,500 depending on the size of the bottle.
Dominican culture is a mix between the African, indigenous and European nations that brings added value to the food and drink offering of the Dominican Republic. However, it also becomes an attraction for the national travel sector.
A sip of this drink refers to the Dominican Republic and those who visit the tourist centers ask for it, from the airports, shopping centers to the hotel stores.
The main buyers of the drink are tourists from Colombia, the United States and Dominicans that live abroad and are visiting their country. Customers who purchase the item as a gift which affects exportation and internationalization.
Drinkers with the most demanding palates can look for exotic combinations such as shrimp, cane and aromatic herbs to taste during their visit to the Dominican capital. Its alcohol level can rise by up to 40 degrees.
