Rainfalls in the Dominican Republic forces hundreds of people to evacuate

The rains of the last few days have forced the displacement of 750 people to safe areas. Another 19 people were rescued from floods or river overflows, which left 16 communities isolated. 150 homes suffered damages.

This can be read in the latest bulletin from the Emergency Operations Center (COE), which keeps 28 provinces on alert, 18 in yellow and 10 in green, for possible flooding of rivers, streams and ravines.

The forecasts of the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) establish that there will be sufficient humidity and instability given by the depression affecting the national territory, so that moderate and heavy showers will continue in various provinces of the country.

The provinces of Santiago, Santo Domingo, La Vega, Distrito Nacional, Monseñor Nouel, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, Duarte, San Pedro de Macorís, Sánchez Ramírez, Santiago Rodríguez and Montecristi, Espaillat, Puerto Plata , María Trinidad Sánchez and Samaná are on yellow alert.

The green alert concerns the provinces of Azua, San Juan, Dajabón, Elías Piña, La Romana, Peravia, El Seibo, Valverde, La Altagracia and Hermanas Mirabal.

The COE recalled that crossing rivers, streams and ravines with large water flows and the use of bathing establishments should be avoided due to strong water currents.
